Historically, flags have been made out of wool, silk, and cotton. With the invention of synthetic fibers, most outdoor flags are now made out of nylon or polyester. Each material has its advantages. Polyester is generally the most durable, the heaviest. Cotton is a natural fiber that looks soft, but will not be as durable as synthetic materials in outdoor weather.
